America ~ The Statehood Quarters

2026 is the 250th anniversary of the founding of The United States. The Statehood Quarters series, issued by the United States Mint between 1999 and 2008, transformed everyday change into a national celebration. Each of the fifty coins bore a distinct design honoring the history, traditions, and symbols of a state, released in the order that each entered the Union. It became the most popular numismatic program in American history—at its peak, nearly half the nation joined the hunt to collect them all. On the back of every quarter, one phrase unites the diversity of designs: E Pluribus Unum —“Out of Many, One.” Those words caught his attention.

In Hayward’s photographs, the coins’ once-official imagery takes on new resonance. Stripped of their original luster, their surfaces now bear the fine scratches, softened edges, and traces of countless exchanges. What were once pristine emblems of statehood have become tokens of shared experience. Hayward’s lens transforms these marks of wear into symbols of connection—echoes of a collective touch and the enduring hope for common understanding.

These works are digital pigment prints, printed on Canson rag photographique paper and are accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
